What's it like wearing extensions for the first time?
May 20, 2022
Never had extensions before? Curious about the process? Hesitant to give them a try?
We’re here to tell you exactly what it’s like to have extensions installed!
We set up one of our Philocaly team members (who had never had any type of extensions before) with her very own set of hand-tied weft extensions.
As a newbie to extensions, we followed her journey to grab a fresh perspective and see what her experience was like. Keep reading to find out how it went...
What was the installation process like?
I had one volume row of hand-tied wefts installed using the beaded row method by Meg Boswell at Platinum Salon (@megboss__). Thanks, Meg!
The entire installation process itself felt so seamless and gentle.
And I was honestly shocked at how quick the installation was. While I only had one row installed, I still expected to be at the salon for a few hours that afternoon. All in all, I was there for just over an hour!
Meg had mentioned that they might feel a little tight on my head at first but would loosen over time. I could feel that it was slightly tight, but this was just a matter of me getting used to having the feeling of extensions more than anything.
What did you think of the extensions after they were installed?
After the extensions were installed, I seriously couldn’t stop staring at my hair in the mirror! I was blown away at 1) the added volume and thickness they gave my hair and 2) how SPOT ON the colour match was to my natural hair.
It was amazing. The extensions blended perfectly and looked so natural, so much that you couldn’t tell AT ALL that it wasn’t my natural hair.
Once I had gotten home, they felt great. They weren’t pulling, and they didn’t feel too heavy in my hair. They just felt like my natural hair.
What was it like sleeping with extensions?
Personally, I didn’t have any issues sleeping with these extensions!
Before bed, I brushed my hair and pulled it back into a low loose braid - this really helped my hair look just as good as it had the day before.
What was it like showering with extensions?
I was most nervous about showering with my extensions. I just made sure to wash thoroughly in between my hair and the extensions, making sure I was being extra gentle at the seams of the wefts. This was easier than I expected!
Afterwards, I followed my regular hair care routine with a leave-in conditioner, a heat protectant spray, and blow-drying.
I also found that my hair lasted longer between washes (a big bonus for anyone who dreads wash day like me)!
Did you experience any damage?
These extensions caused ZERO damage to my natural hair. I was so impressed!
If anyone is worried about whether extensions will damage their natural hair, I’m here to put those worries at ease! These hand-tied wefts left my hair just as healthy as when they were first installed!
Which part took the longest to get used to?
Personally, I found brushing the hardest to get used to! And, honestly, I had the hang of it by day two!
The biggest thing I realized when brushing was to start at the bottom of my hair and make my way up. I always made sure I wasn’t brushing right from my scalp to my ends (this avoids pulling at the seams of the wefts).
What’s the final verdict on Philocaly hair extensions for you?
I genuinely can’t say enough great things about it. The extensions flowed perfectly with my natural hair! I could flip my hair over, put it up in a bun and a ponytail, wash it like usual, and treat it like my normal hair.
They were comfortable and easy to manage, and the colour match was INSANE. Overall, I’m so happy with how the extensions turned out!
