The Philocaly Flip Up Convention
Jun 01, 2022
This past weekend marked the first-ever Philocaly convention and launch of the brand new Flip Up method. And, WOW! What a fantastic weekend it was.
The convention began early Saturday morning with opening speeches from our beautiful Philocaly owners, Kirsten Ortman and Chelsea Lovequist.
Chelsea emphasized her raison d’etre – Philocaly’s community of exceptional educators and stylists. She explained that having started Philocaly four years prior, she took a massive leap of faith in herself, just like all those in attendance.
“We know we wouldn’t be here without our amazing community of stylists that support our company day in and day out. You are the backbone of Philocaly Hair. You are the reason why Kirsten and I get up every morning to do what we do. You’re the reason we love what we do,” said Chelsea.
As Kirsten took the mic, she highlighted the convention as such a huge milestone – one which she couldn’t be happier to share with everyone in the room. As a family-owned company, you truly feel a part of the Philocaly family when you’re with Kirsten and Chelsea.
“Many of you, who have been with us since the beginning, and some who may be new to our company. But, no matter how long you have been with us, I want you to know that our clients are an extension of our family, and we want to welcome you to the Philocaly family with open arms,” said Kirsten.
After opening remarks, Abbey Brookee, Philocaly’s Creative Director and Flip Up Educator took the stage.
You could feel Abbey’s enthusiasm fill the room immediately! With Abbey on stage, she took us step-by-step through the Flip Up method. She completed her demonstration during the morning session, and after lunch, stylists were given mannequins to implement their new knowledge first-hand.
We were so thrilled to be joined by our fabulous educators, Taylor Dubois (@taylordubois.hair), Amber Joy (@hairbyamberjoy), Braxton Thomas (@braxtonthomashair), Tori Dawn (@tori_at_theglambar), and Kaylee Topola (@extensionsbykaylee.yxe).
With our Educators already trained in the Flip Up method, their expertise was key as they assisted stylists in learning this technique throughout the day.
Now, we couldn’t speak about the convention without mentioning one of the absolute highlights – cocktail hour! Spirits were at an all-time high this night!
Kicking off cocktail hour, we took this opportunity to push everyone slightly out of their comfort zones with some icebreaker games. First on the agenda was the ‘Who am I’ challenge – where we placed stickers with famous names on everyone’s back. With our investigative skills fully engaged, we asked yes or no questions to try and narrow down whether we were Britney Spears or Kylie Jenner (for example).
Next up was the Philocaly trivia. Drink ticket prizes flowed as stylists ran up to the mic to share what they thought might be the correct answer. We asked questions like, “what does the name ‘Philocaly’ mean?” Do you know?! (Hint: the love of beauty).
The energy was buzzing throughout the night, and we closed the evening with lots of smiles and laughter as we got to know one another better.
Day 2 was all about perfecting the Flip Up!
During the morning session, we focused more on hands-on application with support from Abbey and our Educators.
In the afternoon, we were joined by Alicia Soulier, Founder of SalonScale Technology Inc. Alicia shared her company's story and spoke of the benefits of her management app that allows stylists and salon owners to weigh, charge, and track everything in the back bar.
We then wrapped up the convention with professional headshots, followed by the official Flip Up method certifications presentation.
Looking back on the weekend, we are beaming from head to toe over the convention’s success. We want to thank everyone who attended – we couldn’t have done it without you!
If you didn’t have a chance to attend the convention, no problem! Check out the ‘Education’ tab on our website to register for a class near you.
Have five or more stylists interested in learning the Flip Up? Send us an email, and we would be more than happy to discuss host salon benefits.
Together, let’s #levelupwithflipup!
xoxo,
Philocaly Hair
