Is Blonde Hair Really "Cheugy"?
Dec 10, 2021
So, the ongoing Millennial vs. Gen Z debate we’ve been seeing all over TikTok continues. Remember the skinny jeans uproar? Or, the side part versus middle part argument? I’m sure most of us are sitting behind our screens, rolling our eyes, and wondering what will be the next thing that Gen Z will label as “uncool”.
Well, here’s the next big controversy – blonde hair is officially OUT, and brunette is in.
“Cheugy” – a term coined by Gen Zers earlier this year, meant to describe something as being the opposite of trendy and stylish. We are talking, “Live Laugh Love” written on EVERYTHING, UGG boots, and apparently Disney Land, to name a few.
We hate to say it, but TikTokers have now decided that blonde hair is exactly that... “cheugy”.
All over the internet, we are seeing people ditching their bleached blonde locks and swapping them for the “expensive brunette” aesthetic – a rich, glossy, and natural dark brown (think Kate Middleton).
While we are crying for all our blonde gals out there... we can’t help but admit that we are loving the darker hues on celebs such as Gigi Hadid, Hailey Bieber, Florence Pugh, Sofia Richie, and most recently Billie Eilish.
Although, being “trendy” isn’t the only benefit of going dark. We love this trend for keeping our strands strong and healthy.
For all the dyed blonde queens, we know that bleach can sometimes leave our hair feeling dry and brittle. While blonde hair is beautiful, it often comes with the need for that extra TLC. Hitting pause on the bleach is never a bad idea – it can help those locks recover by restoring its strength and natural shine.
Another added bonus... less upkeep. We know that it isn’t always easy being blonde – having to book consistent root touch-up appointments, the additional cost of purple shampoos, the endless hair masks required to manage the breakage – it can be a full-time commitment! With this shift to dying our hair within a few shades of our natural colour, we might not only be helping the health of our hair... but our pockets too!
Now, for all our blondes out there, we can’t say for sure if this is just the usual seasonal “go dark for fall and winter” OR if this really is a trend that is here to stay. So, we urge you not to give up on the bleach for good just yet...
If TikTok convinced you to ditch the skinny jeans or adopt the middle part, we’re here to remind you that beauty is an ever-changing industry. Whether you are brunette or blonde, do whatever makes you feel happy and confident!
And just so you know... we still want to see you rocking those bold blonde shades all year round, EVEN if brunette is currently having a moment.
What do you think? Is blonde hair REALLY cheugy?
